Bali, die Insel der Götter und unzähligen Tempel. Vor jedem Haus gibt es einen Tempel der das Haus beschützt, wenn die Bewohner aushäusig sind. In diesen Tempeln leben die Schutzgötter zur Sicherheit der Bewohner. Diesen Göttern werden Opfergaben gegeben. Dies Opfergaben finden sich aber nicht nur an den Hauseingängen und in deren Tempeln, sondern an jeder Stelle die ein Gläubiger als würdig empfindet.
Wer sich die Geländer und Absturzsicherungen im privaten und öffentlichen Bereich anschaut der wird feststellen, dass diesen jegliche Sicherheitsaspekte fehlen wie wir sie aus zB Deutschland kennen. Teilweise fehlen diese Sicherungen gänzlich. Öffentliche Treppen haben ein Steigungsmaß das man kaum als solches bezeichnen kann. Nun kenne ich die Unfallstatistiken Balis nicht, aber mir fiel auf, dass es anstelle von technischen Absturzsicherungen in kurzen Abständen eben auch hier Götter gibt die über den Weg und die Gefahren die auf diesem lauern, wachen. Auch hier gibt es also Sicherheitsgötter. In diesem Fall anstelle von Absturzsicherungen. Nicht DIN tauglich, aber es scheint zu funktionieren.
Was jedem sofort auffällt ist der Verkehr auf Bali, der so garnicht zu einer Urlaubsinsel passen will. Im Grunde ist die Insel ein einziger Verkehrsstau. Und man ist versucht zu glauben, dass dies aus technischer Unfähigkeit resultieren würde, aber weit gefehlt. Die Balinesen wissen sehr wohl, dass ihr Strassenverkehr ein Problem darstellt und sie suchen Wege, dieses zu lösen. Aber das ist nicht ganz so einfach. Denn Straßenbrücken dürfen nicht gebaut werden. Denn auf einer Straße gibt es Prozessionen. Und während einer Prozession trägt man die Götter über sich auf seinem Kopf und mit diesen Göttern auf dem Kopf passt man nicht unter einer Brücke durch. Die Götter würden eingeklemmt werden. Die einzige Brücke die es auf Bali gibt ist eine Unterführung in der Nähe des Flughafens. Eine Prozession wird dort niemals durchgehen, da hat man einen Kompromiss gefunden. Und auf dem Meer gibt es ein regelrechtes Autobahnkreuz mit allen möglichen Über- und Unterführungen. Das geht. Das ist ja auch nicht auf dem Land sondern auf dem Meer.
Natürlich könnte ein Teil des Verkehrsproblems auch dadurch gelöst werden, dass man Brücken zu den Nachbarinseln baut. Aber dann könnte man Bali nicht mehr zu Fuß umwandern. Und das darf nicht sein, da Bali dann nicht mehr als Insel existieren würde, was wiederum einen Grundpfeiler des Hinduismus auf Bali darstellt.

The protective gods live in these temples for the safety of the inhabitants. Offerings are made to these gods. However, these offerings are not only found at the entrances to houses and in their temples, but in any place that a believer deems worthy.
If you take a look at the railings and fall protection systems in private and public areas, you will notice that they lack any safety aspects as we know them from Germany, for example. In some cases, these safeguards are missing altogether. Public staircases have a gradient that can hardly be described as such. Now I don’t know the accident statistics for Bali, but I noticed that instead of technical fall protection at short intervals, there are also gods here who watch over the path and the dangers that lurk on it. So there are safety gods here too. In this case instead of fall protection. Not suitable for DIN, but it seems to work.
What strikes everyone immediately is the traffic on Bali, which doesn’t seem at all like a vacation island. Basically, the island is one big traffic jam. And one is tempted to believe that this is the result of technical incompetence, but far from it. The Balinese are well aware that their road traffic is a problem and they are looking for ways to solve it. But it’s not that simple. Road bridges are not allowed to be built. Because there are processions on a road. And during a procession, you carry the gods above you on your head and you can’t fit under a bridge with these gods on your head. The gods would get trapped. The only bridge that exists in Bali is an underpass near the airport. A procession will never go through there, a compromise has been found. And on the sea there is a veritable highway interchange with all kinds of overpasses and underpasses. That works. It’s not on land, it’s on the sea.
Of course, part of the traffic problem could also be solved by building bridges to the neighboring islands. But then you would no longer be able to walk around Bali. And that should not be the case, as Bali would then no longer exist as an island, which in turn is a cornerstone of Hinduism on Bali.
